Lady 'Stangs Split Softball Twinbill With Visiting St. Mary's

Silver City, NM -- Western New Mexico's softball team started out their last home series of the season with a bang Friday, leading visiting St. Mary's 3-0 before giving up six runs in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh to drop game one of Friday's double-header 8-3. The Mustangs came back strong in the nightcap, dropping the Rattlers 7-1 to even the series and to move to 21-20 overall and 14-8 in Heartland Conference play. St. Mary's fell to 41-21 (15-7 HC).

The Mustangs got hits from Meredith Drahota, Tiffany DeVaurs and Erica Beltran in game one before the St. Mary's explosion in the final innings, which saw the Rattlers register 15 hits in the game to WNMU's three.

Game two saw the Mustangs defense hold the Rattlers to just one run, that coming in the six inning. WNMU pounded three runs in the first and followed up with two more in the second. Western added one run each in the fourth and fifth for the final 7-1 margin.

WNMU got 10 hits in game two to St. Mary's six.

The two teams play again Saturday to end the regular season, before moving to the conference tournament April 27-29.
